It is becoming more widely acknowledged that, despite being developed to safeguard crops and promote agricultural development, agrochemicals have detrimental effects on human health, especially for farm laborers and their offspring.

One such study from Environmental Research revealed that out of the 27 articles reviewed, 78% of them suggested a connection between pesticide exposure and the prevalence of depressive symptoms. The most frequently reported pesticides included pyrethroids (11 studies), herbicides (12 studies), and organophosphates (17 studies).

Given that more chemical pesticides are being used and that the health risks linked to depression are detrimental, it is important to put in place strict procedures to monitor the mental health of agricultural workers who are often exposed to pesticides, improve supervision of businesses applying these chemicals, and above all, shift to the use of organic pesticides that are naturally safe for agricultural workers, communities, and the environment.
